1. Check Your Moving Dates
This is the first place to start. If you are selling and buying property, contact the conveyancers and relevant agencies for specific dates, or in the case of renting, get this in writing from your landlords. Remember that chains can lead to delays, so prepare to be flexible.
2. Contact Your Utility Suppliers
Once you have your dates confirmed, contact your utility suppliers to either switch or cancel, including electricity, gas, water, landline phone and broadband. Just as moving house takes time, so too can moving services, so give providers ample notice to avoid waiting.
Before moving out, note down your meter readings to pass to your suppliers. Take a photo if possible so that it will be time stamped. Settle any outstanding bills and contact your local authority to receive a final statement for your council tax.

3. Update Your Address
Informing your contacts of a change of address might sound simple, but you will be surprised how many are on the list! If you have dependents, their contacts will need updating too. Here are some of the most important places to inform.

4. Research Your New Property
There is nothing worse than moving home only to find a fault. Plan ahead by finding out where everything is in your new property including gas and electricity metres, fuse box, thermostat, stopcock (the valve for the main water supply), and instructions for appliances.

5. Arrange Your Home Removal
Moving house is exhausting so it can be helpful to use a professional service. Look around for quotes to get the best deal using The British Association of Removers and get rid of unwanted clutter as you pack. Keep any valuables on your person.
Label your boxes clearly and include lists of their contents. Put aside essentials such as a kettle, mugs, teabags, cleaning products, toilet roll and bedding so you can feel more comfortable on your arrival. Finally, once you have moved house, take the night off – you will have earned it!
